At CSWCSS, homework is an integral part of the education we provide. Teachers at CSWCSS provide a wide range of homework to cultivate students’ different generic skills and focus on quality over quantity of homework. While homework enables students to reinforce and consolidate their learning, it assists the process of assessment for and as learning – teachers can gather vital information from students’ work to determine and revise their teaching progress and strategies, and hence better cater for learners’ diversity; students can get timely feedback and identify their strengths and areas of improvement. Parents can monitor their children’s learning progress and performance through checking their student handbook and their homework. Students are expected to submit their homework on time. With the aforementioned aims in mind, we have therefore formulated the following homework policy and support programmes in order to help students achieve greater success at CSWCSS:

  1. Homework Policy
    1. Setting and giving homework
      1. Panel Heads, after consulting their members, must derive a homework policy for their corresponding subject in terms of Variety, Frequency, Quantity, Quality, and Feedback, and put forward strategies for handling students who fail to submit their work.
      2. The homework policy of all subjects should be forwarded to the Principal and the Assistant Principals, who will make constructive comments and provide guidance as necessary.
      3. The homework policy should be reviewed regularly to maintain a balance between the demands of the subject and the learning needs of students.
    2. Feedback
Assignments should be properly marked, graded, commented upon, and recorded to ensure that suitable feedback is given to students in a timely manner.
    3. Supervision
Panel Heads are to monitor the homework policy and ensure it is properly carried out by panel members. Regular checks of students’ work should be carried out in February each year. Random checks should be made and recorded bi-monthly, tri-monthly, quarterly, or half-yearly. Records will be inspected by the Principal, Vice-Principal, and the Assistants Principals .
    4. Student Handbook (F.1-F.6)
      1. The Student Handbook is used to record different types of homework, including preparation work and collecting materials.
      2. Students should record homework to be submitted on a later day — once on the day the work is assigned, and again on the day before the work is due (especially for F.1 students).
      3. Subject teachers and class monitors should write the homework assigned on the board every day. Teachers are requested to assign a reasonable amount of work, taking into consideration students’ abilities.
      4. Subject teachers should use the Student Handbook to inform parents of their son’s failure to submit homework by completing the ‘Correspondence’ section.
      5. The Student Handbook should be signed and checked by parents and Class Teachers weekly.
      6. Random checks of Student Handbooks will be carried out by Academic Board members.
    5. Posting of homework and test record on Internet
Records of homework and tests for all F.1–F.3 classes are to be posted on the school’s online system every school day. They are accessible to students, teachers, and parents and serve as a reference for test schedules and homework collection. Daily records of F.1–F.3 students who fail to submit homework on time will be kept for follow-up.

  2. 9th Lesson (Chinese, English, and Mathematics) for Junior Form Students
The 9th Lesson programme provides targeted academic support to junior form students who are struggling in core subjects. By identifying students performing at the bottom of their cohort in Chinese, English, and Mathematics — as well as those recommended by their teachers — the programme aims to bridge learning gaps and foster a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.
    • Timing
The 9th Lesson is conducted after school from 4:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
    • Target Students
      1. General Principle: The bottom ten students in any of the core subjects (Chinese, English, and Mathematics).
      2. Special Arrangement: Students recommended by their teachers.
    • Logistics
      1. The panels of Chinese, English, and Mathematics are required to provide the list of students to the Academic Board.
      2. Panels are required to assign responsible teachers to conduct the 9th Lesson.
      3. Subject teachers are required to take attendance.
      4. The Academic Board will issue a school notice and monitor the attendance and performance of students before and after the lessons.
